Most registered vehicle from NASDAQ star Tesla share: This Tesla model dominates and remains a bestseller in Europe

Electric cars are on the rise worldwide. Given the high demand, the selection is also increasing: more and more providers are bringing new EV models onto the market. But in Europe, the best-selling models are dominated by an industry leader.

• Enormous growth in new registrations of electric cars
• VW dominates the entire car market
• Tesla’s Model Y dominates the EV market in Europe

165,165 electric vehicles were newly registered in the EU in August 2023. This means that the number rose by a whopping 118.1 percent compared to the previous year, according to a statement from the Association des Constructeurs Européens d’Automobiles, the European Automobile Manufacturers Association (ACEA). Around 21 percent of all newly registered vehicles in the European Union were pure EV models – one in five newly registered vehicles. The largest volume market was Germany, where the growth in new registrations in the battery-powered vehicle segment reached 179.7 percent, although this was also due to the reduction in the electric car premium on September 1st, which encouraged many people interested in automobiles to make early purchases.

This means that electric cars moved up to third place among the most popular vehicles in the EU behind classic petrol engines and electric hybrids and, according to the industry association, relegated diesel vehicles to fourth place for the second time in history.

This picture was also confirmed when looking at Europe as a whole: 904,509 vehicles were newly registered in Europe in August, with the number of newly registered electric cars doubling.

Tesla Model Y most popular vehicle in Europe

While Volkswagen was able to record the most new registrations across all classes with 99,266 vehicles in August, the trophy for the greatest growth goes to the electric car manufacturer Tesla: the US company achieved a 240 percent increase in new European registrations in August.

And the best-selling vehicle in Europe – regardless of drive type – was the Model Y, the electric SUV from Tesla, according to data from JATO Dynamics, a data provider for the automotive industry. Accordingly, the Model Y was newly registered 21,549 times across the European continent in August, an increase of 208 percent. According to JATO, no other vehicle could beat this number: The second place in the list of the most registered vehicles in Europe was the 208 from the Stellantis subsidiary Peugeot, which had 15,840 new registrations (+4 percent), while the VW T-Roc had 15,198 registrations (-7 percent) remained behind.

Looking at the year to date, the Model Y remains the undefeated frontrunner: up to and including August, there were 169,420 new European registrations for Tesla’s SUV, which corresponds to a threefold increase compared to the previous year. Felipe Munoz, Global Analyst at JATO Dynamics, sees this trend continuing through the end of the year: “It is likely that the Model Y will be Europe’s most popular new passenger car by the end of the year,” which he says given that a non-European model has become the most popular Vehicle of Europe is described as “remarkable and historic”. In Germany and the United Kingdom, the Model Y came in fifth place as the most popular vehicle, and in Belgium, Denmark, the Netherlands, Norway, Sweden and Switzerland, the SUV even topped the statistics.
