The number of millionaire households in the Netherlands has increased for the tenth year in a row, according to research by Statistics Netherlands (CBS). The most recent figures for 2024 were published today.

Across the Netherlands, 17,000 rich people were added in the previous year. The Netherlands now has 452,000 millionaire households; a doubling compared to 2014.

North Holland has the most millionaires

While the national average is about 5.5 percent, the millionaire density is highest in North Holland: no less than 7 percent. Bloemendaal and Laren are doing great, because one in three residents there is blessed with a fortune of more than a million. Blaricum and Heemstede are also high on the list with more than 20 percent. Relatively speaking, the fewest millionaires live in Den Helder.

By the way, not every millionaire actually has millions in the bank. In the wealth figures, Statistics Netherlands includes the value of a home and any mortgage debt. Due to rising wages and house prices, the number of millionaire households continues to increase.

Income and assets

There is an aging population at all levels of society, including the richest. Four in ten millionaires live on a pension. More than half of the workers are self-employed. Although this percentage has been decreasing for years, it is a significant difference with non-millionaires: about 86 percent of them are employed.

In terms of assets, a clear trend can be seen in the statistics agency’s figures. Three-quarters of non-millionaire households own their own home. For millionaires this is only a quarter and their assets are further supplemented by business assets and shares. The larger someone’s wealth becomes, the more it consists of shares.
