The current on the island was out in the night from Tuesday to Wednesday around 3 am, after which there was a complete blackout on the island. According to Aqualectra, the failure was due to a sudden change in wind strength. As a result, the voltage on the network changed so strongly that the power installations on the island failed one by one. More and more power in Curaçao is generated via wind turbines.
Curaçao affected by power outage
Aqualectra appeals to the residents of Curaçao to be careful with electricity in the coming days. People can help the network to strain less by turning air conditioners, not turning on lamps and switching off devices, according to Aqualectra, that the situation still calls “fragile.”
Because of that fragile situation, education minister Sithree of Heydoorn announced Wednesday evening (local time) that the schools in Curaçao will remain closed again on Thursday because of “the persistent problems with the electricity supply”. Due to the power failure, the schools were also closed on Wednesday.
