More than 50,000 people celebrate ‘Fat Tuesday’ with the Gilles in Binche | Interior

As tradition dictates, the festivities started very early in the morning with the pick-up of the Gilles at home from 5 a.m. to the beat of the drum and a breakfast of oysters and champagne.

The carnivalists were then received at the town hall, after which they marched through the streets of Binche in a first procession. As always, they handed out oranges, a symbol of abundance.

After a detour on the Grand Place and a lunch break, the Gilles started their second procession in front of thousands of enthusiastic spectators. As always, the evening ends with fireworks on the Grote Markt.

Like Sunday and Monday, Tuesday’s festivities passed without major incident, authorities said.
