More than 15,000 cases of monkey pox in Europe and 2 deaths | medical

So far, a total of 15,624 cases of monkeypox virus have been reported in 32 different countries in Europe. Two patients died. This is stated in a joint report by the European Center for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) and the World Health Organization (WHO) on Wednesday.

According to the report, 482 people in our country have already been infected with the virus. The worst affected European countries are Spain (4,577 infections), the United Kingdom and Germany (both 2,724 cases).

Nearly all reported cases have been confirmed by laboratory testing (15,524 out of 15,624 cases).
About 41 percent of patients are between the ages of 31 and 40. It mainly concerns men (99.1 percent).

Almost all patients (95 percent) had a skin rash. Also, 65 percent had to deal with symptoms such as fever, fatigue, muscle aches, chills or headache.

399 patients in hospital

Only a small proportion of patients, 399 cases or 5.6 percent, are hospitalized. Three of them have been admitted to the intensive care unit, but for one of them it was for a different reason that the infection with the monkeypox virus. The other two cases admitted to intensive care are said to have died of monkey pox. The WHO previously reported that two people have died from monkey pox in Spain.

Some of the patients (41) were health professionals, but they are not said to have been occupationally exposed to the virus.

The World Health Organization activated its highest alert level, the Public Health Emergency of International Concern (PHEIC), on July 24 to step up the fight against monkeypox, also known as simian orthopoxvirosis. The organization expects an increase in the number of deaths.
