Entrepreneurs are increasingly switching to an electric van with subsidies. The annual subsidy budget available for the purchase of such vehicles has run out as of today. In total, more than 5,500 electric delivery vans will be added to the road through this scheme this year. A total of 22 million euros was available. The subsidy scheme will run until 2025 and will be reopened every year. State Secretary Heijnen (Infrastructure and Water Management) has made 33 million euros available for 2023.

Heijnen: “The fact that this subsidy has now run out shows that more and more entrepreneurs want to make the transition to emission-free driving. I think that’s a positive sign. Electric driving is not yet attractive for all entrepreneurs, but you are seeing it more and more. The mail, a package, the groceries, quiet and clean delivery vans are increasingly driving through the street. That is real progress and we will continue to do so in the coming years.”

Entrepreneurs switch to electric driving

The Netherlands is working towards a zero-emission mobility sector. Our commitment is to have reduced emissions of all sectors together by at least 55% by 2030 compared to 1990. Clean transport helps to achieve that goal. An electric van is an example of this. The cabinet wants to help entrepreneurs to switch, preferably at a time when they were already planning to buy another vehicle. Entrepreneurs can count on a financial contribution when purchasing an electric vehicle. Depending on the size of their company, they can be reimbursed 40% to 60% of the additional costs of an electric vehicle through subsidies and tax benefits.

More vans in 2023

With this subsidy, more than 5,500 clean vans will be added to the road this year. On average, approximately 4,200 euros in subsidy is provided per car. The percentage of new vans sold that are emission-free is increasing. This year it is about 7%. In total, there are more than 900,000 delivery vans on the road in the Netherlands.

The subsidy scheme for 2023 will be opened on Tuesday 10 January. The maximum amount per van will also be EUR 5,000 next year. In 2023, a total of 33 million euros will be available for entrepreneurs who switch to an electric van. This applies to all new vans, purchase or lease.
