More and more and younger adolescents engage in self-mutilation: one in four students has already self-harmed

The Flemish youth is not doing so well. As many as one in four young people indicate that they have already practiced self-mutilation. ‘Het Nieuwsblad’ writes this on the basis of research by Imke Baetens, professor of psychology at the VUB. Between the beginning of 2020 and the end of 2021, the number of adolescents who self-mutilated increased from 21 to 29 percent. Moreover, self-mutilation is now also appearing among primary school children.
