Metal shavings on the bike track
As of: June 8, 2026 5:46 p.m
At the Ironman in Hamburg on Sunday, metal shavings were scattered on the bike course – apparently intentionally. Now the state security is investigating.
The metal splinters lay spread over several meters on the course of the Everyman Race in the Kirchwerder district of the Bergedorf district in the morning. Dozens of amateur drivers were no longer able to avoid it – many of them ran out of air and some even crashed. At least one 29-year-old participant suffered a broken bone and was hospitalized. Numerous participants had to interrupt or abandon the race.
According to the police, these were tiny, millimeter-sized parts. The police are still working with the organizer to determine how many bikes were damaged in total. The State Security Office of the State Criminal Police Office has taken over the investigation – on suspicion of attempted grievous bodily harm and damage to property.
No stopping signs along the route removed
There had already been an incident the day before. Unknown persons removed no-stopping signs and announcement posters placed along the route. The police are investigating whether the two are connected. The Hamburg police are now looking for witnesses who made suspicious observations in Kirchwerder. This also applies to the evening and the night before the race.
The background to the actions could be that there were many discussions in the Bergedorf district about the route of the cycle route. Residents felt restricted by the closures. There were also protest signs along the route (“You are robbing us of our freedom”).
