The Nuremberg multi-brand retailer Wöhrl is continuing its expansion and will be opening a location in Chemnitz for the first time in November 2026. The new branch will be built on around 2,000 square meters in the former Galeria building on Neumarkt and will be the company’s 30th location. Last year, Wöhrl secured a floor in the empty Nuremberg Galeria building for an outlet.
With this move, Wöhrl is opening up another market in eastern Germany and securing a central city center location directly opposite the Chemnitz town hall. The building is currently being extensively modernized and will in future be operated as a mixed-use property with municipal services, retail and restaurants. Wöhrl has signed a long-term rental agreement for the space.
According to the company, around 25 new jobs will be created.
“The usage concept for the building and its central location in the heart of the city are good conditions for high customer frequency,” explains Thomas Weckerlein, CEO of Wöhrl. “As the third largest city in Saxony with an extensive catchment area, Chemnitz offers great potential for our brand world. We are looking forward to the launch this year.”
Rudolf Wöhrl SE, based in Nuremberg, is one of the largest multi-brand retailers in the German fashion retail sector. The family business was founded in 1933 and today operates 28 fashion stores in southern and eastern Germany, an outlet in Nuremberg and its own online shop. After the opening in Chemnitz, the branch network will grow to 30 locations. In total, the company employs around 1,200 people.
Since the restart in 2017, Wöhrl has been owned by Christian Greiner, the grandson of the company founder Rudolf Wöhrl. The company is managed by board members Thomas Weckerlein and Tobias Triebel. In the past financial year, which ended on July 31, 2025, total sales amounted to 170.3 million euros. This corresponded to a decrease of 6.4 percent compared to the previous year. In terms of earnings, the company was able to reduce its loss.
