BRIENZ (dpa-AFX) – There is a threat of another rock fall in the Swiss mountain village of Brienz. According to the community, geologists expect that up to 150,000 cubic meters of rock could come loose above the town in the next few days. The amount corresponds to around 150 single-family homes.

In an unfavorable case, the breaking mass could set another pile of rubble in motion. This could create a debris flow of up to a million cubic meters of material. “Parts of the village could be affected by this,” the community said. But it is also possible that the event will have no further impact.

The village was evacuated in May 2023 because of the threat of a huge avalanche of rubble. A few weeks later, 1.2 million cubic meters of rock fell down the valley and narrowly missed the site. The approximately 80 residents were able to return in July 2023, but in November 2024 the situation was again so serious that an eviction was ordered again./mrd/DP/mis
