1986 Miss Finland Tuula Portin (nee Polvi) says in an interview with Anna magazine that the years of publicity that came with the mission prepared her for her current job. Now 57, Portin works as a hospital theologian in Hämeenlinna.

Although misseys was a leap into the unknown, the performance experience gained through publicity and modeling gave me the courage to approach unknown people. Skill is worth its weight in gold in the profession of a hospital theologian.

– Model world was a good school for my current job. It’s natural for me to approach patients, to open the door to the patient’s room without knowing who is there, says Portin.

– Many have said that my presence is calming. It is something that is in me, not taught. It’s easy for me to side with the sick and the suffering. When there is a grieving person across from you, one of the most important tasks of a caregiver is to give the grieving person space to grieve.

Portin also cherishes space and peace in his own life. In March, he went on a pilgrimage to Assisi, Italy.

– With age, the need to be alone has become more prominent, I long for silence, Porti sums up.

Portin’s brother’s death in 1989 brought him to the brink of spiritual reflection. Portin was visiting his parents in Lapua in October when the doorbell rang. A serious-looking person dressed in an army uniform stood at the door. My younger brother, who was in the army, had committed suicide.

– It was a huge shock, without any warning signs or indications.

– A longing for God arose in me. I started reading spiritual literature, Portin told Iltalehti in an interview in 2021.

Portin found a spiritual community, in whose activities he began to participate. After a year, he applied and was able to study at the theological faculty.
