Minister of Foreign Affairs Ruben Brekelmans today spoke with Prime Minister Pisas (Curaçao), Lieutenhebant Soliano (Bonaire) and a representative of Prime Minister Eman (Aruba), about current developments in the region, including the American deployment in the Caribbean Sea.
Minister Brekelmans underlined that the current American commitment focuses primarily on counter-drug operations in international waters and that the Kingdom is not involved. At the same time, the Netherlands continues to talk to the parties involved to look after the interests of the Kingdom.
Minister Brekelmans: ‘We are one kingdom. Right now it is important that we inform each other quickly, completely and unambiguously. This way we remain alert together, we offer peace and clarity to our residents and we protect our economies. “
The directors of Curaçao, Bonaire and Aruba emphasized in the conversation that the situation there is polite up close. That is why fast and clear communication is important to be able to properly inform the residents and visitors.
During the conversation it was agreed to continue to follow the situation closely and to strengthen existing lines of communication and to continue to coordinate.
