Google is starting a big Christmas cleaning, in connection with which the company will destroy Google accounts that have been unused for more than two years. There have been warnings about the cleaning process in question for a long time, but despite this, these remarks have certainly managed to sneak past.

In connection with the cleaning, Google will delete all the content of the rejected accounts. This includes photos, calendar entries, Drive files, emails, and so on. Cleaning work only applies to personal accounts.

The actual cleaning operation starts on December 1st, so you should quickly check the status of, for example, your own secondary accounts or accounts created for projects that have ended since then, before the deadline expires.

You should remember that Google will continue to delete inactive accounts in the future as well. The practice in question only starts in December, after which users must remember to keep their accounts active in the future.

Keeping your account active doesn’t require a lot of effort. Google’s support page according to the following measures are sufficient.

  • Reading or sending email
  • Using Google Drive
  • Watching a YouTube video
  • Sharing a picture
  • Downloading the application
  • Using Google Search
  • Signing into a third-party application or service using the Sign in with Google Account feature

Transactions are account-specific, so the device used should not matter. In other words, in light of this information, you can save your Google account, which is teetering on the brink of destruction, by logging into it and, for example, watching one YouTube video.

Even in the worst case, Google does not delete the account unexpectedly, but before the deadline expires, the company sends notifications to both the email address associated with the account and the one used to restore the account.

If you really want to protect the contents of your account, you can take advantage of Google Takeout feature. This allows you to download a backup of the account information.
