Million Dollar Island almost falls from top 25 viewership: ‘It’s too fake!’

Million Dollar Island, the latest TV child of John de Mol, almost falls out of the top 25 viewership after two weeks. The third episode of the SBS 6 show yesterday reached only 427 thousand viewers.

The SBS 6 viewer has dropped out en masse at Million Dollar Island. After 569 thousand and 613 thousand viewers for the first two episodes, the third episode reached 427 thousand viewers (9% market share) yesterday. That is thirty percent lower than the week before and good for a disappointing 24th place in the daily top 25 viewership.

‘Too orchestrated!’

According to comedian Martijn Koning, the program, in which a hundred people on an uninhabited island compete for a large amount of money, is staged too much. “I got to ten or twelve minutes. I can’t help it, but I can’t stand scripted reality,” he says in the Knorrepodcast

He continues: “It is so directed and I think that’s too bad about this. If there are interesting people then it is still possible, but they are real… I thought there were too many people with an intellectual disability, which I find uninteresting and I actually think it is a bit pathetic.”

Tattoo-Tokkies

Martijn has the idea that you can no longer find normal people for reality programs, because people with sense now know exactly what to expect from a participation.

As a result, you are only left with uninteresting people, says Martijn. “You have the tattoo Tokkies, the pretty boys and the mentally handicapped. That’s what’s going around there. The only thing they all have the same is no personality. There is no one I found interesting or of whom I thought: I want to know more about that.”

Damper for SBS 6

For SBS 6 and creator John de Mol, it is a huge downer. They had hoped Million Dollar Island would catch on; Shownieuws tried to hype things up enormously weeks before the start. That did not work. Wie van de Drie, which is broadcast immediately before, was also not really popular with 497 thousand viewers (8%).

The most viewed titles during prime time were Boer Zoekt Vrouw with 3 million viewers (48%) on NPO 1, the subsequent broadcast Wie Denk Je Wel Dat Je Bent with 974 thousand viewers (21%) and the RTL 4 titles Beat the Champions. (847 thousand and 14%) and Humberto (794 thousand and 20%).

Viewing figures

Programs that (also) did not reach the top fifteen viewing figures include Shownieuws (588 thousand), Studio Voetbal (542 thousand), Hart van Nederland (515 thousand), WNL op Zondag (464 thousand) and Kiespijn (395 thousand).
