Rangnick could bring along his 34-year-old international, who is leaving Real Madrid on a free transfer
Between idea, suggestion and suggestion. David Alaba and Milan could find themselves on the same path. The Austrian, who became great at Bayern Munich and in the last five seasons at Real Madrid, is ready to live a new experience at the age of 34 (he will turn at the end of June). The connection with the Rossoneri would obviously pass through Ralf Rangnick, his coach in the national team, as well as his real sponsor. And then, who knows, if he really landed at Milanello he might have the chance to make a dream come true: playing in midfield.

With his contract with Real Madrid expiring, Alaba could represent an interesting opportunity for Milan. In recent years he has often been unavailable due to various physical problems (he missed around 140 games in the five Spanish seasons, especially due to a torn cruciate, a subsequent meniscus problem, and several calf contractures), but quality and experience (he has won 39 titles, including 4 Champions League) are objective. He has a good relationship with Rangnick, Milan would sign him to strengthen the defense (he has always moved either as a left back or as a central defender), but with the possible farewells of Modric and Rabiot he could also realize his desire to play continuously as a midfielder. He has done it throughout his career, it is his favorite area of the pitch, although he has mainly been used to set up the rearguard. “David is a full-back, even if he didn’t even realize it,” said Van Gaal, the first to launch him at great levels.

Already in 2016, on the occasion of his last renewal with Bayern, he had obtained the promise to play in midfield, but in the end he was always deployed further back. For this reason he decided, in 2021, to leave the Bavarians. In addition to Real Madrid, PSG tried to sign him, but the French refused to put down on paper the condition of using him in midfield. With equal treatment, therefore, he chose Real. Things initially went very well in Madrid: he made 85 appearances in the first two seasons. Then, in the third, still starting, he tore his cruciate (it was December 2023) and from that moment on he never went beyond 16 chips. “Bayern belongs to one of the biggest clubs in the world and the same goes for Real Madrid – he stated in an interview with Kicker -. But here I have to say that everything is a little bigger, without disrespecting Bayern. Here you can immediately feel a special aura. The atmosphere is unique. I fit in well, I speak Spanish. You can always perceive the greatness of the club, both when you are in the sports center and when you walk around the city”.

From a very young age Alaba had a well-defined personality. Nigerian father and Filipino mother, his parents moved to Vienna before he was born to give him more opportunities. At school, however, he was often bullied for the color of his skin. “Maybe that made me stronger.” At 15, his first match against Austria Vienna, then the transfer to Munich where, still a minor, in his first appearances with Bayern he stood out because, without awe, he shouted at Ribery and gave him tactical instructions. To make himself heard he even went as far as whistling, complete with fingers in his mouth: he managed not only to attract Ribery’s attention, but to gain his respect. The two became great friends. In Austria his response to a local politician who had gone to visit the national team also caused a sensation. “Look, you can speak German with me, I’m Austrian like you,” he told him when the politician addressed him in English.

He enjoys spending time with family and friends. They usually visit him without even telling him. The only rule is that everyone in his house has to take off their shoes. He has always dressed extravagantly (“For me fashion is a way of expressing oneself, of bringing out one’s personality, it is a way of communicating”) and every day he reads verses from the Bible. He even uploaded a video on Facebook in which he reads Psalm 23 (that of the good shepherd). First he wanted to explain why to the users: “I want to read it to you to help you start your day well, because I believe that you are on the right path if you decide to let God into your life. Because he will be there when you need him and when you knock on his door”. His faith is so deep that before matches he reads passages from the Bible (“I usually do it on the way to the stadium”) and in the past he even went on holiday to Mykonos with Jan Kohler, pastor of the Pentecostal Hillsong Church in Munich, a congregation of which Justin Bieber is also a member. For Alaba, Kohler is a great preacher. And who knows, maybe soon I might invite him for an Italian holiday too…
