Mike Teunissen takes over red leader’s jersey from teammate Gesink

Mike Teunissen from Den Bosch has taken over the red leader’s jersey from teammate Robert Gesink in the second stage of the Vuelta. The Jumbo-Visma rider finished fourth in the bunch sprint. He won the red jersey with that. The second stage went from Den Bosch to Utrecht.

Irishman Sam Bennett (Bora-hansgrohe) won the second stage. In the sprint he defeated the Dane Mads Pedersen, the Belgian Tim Merlier and Mike Teunissen.

On Friday, thanks to the victory of his team Jumbo-Visma in the team time trial, Robert Gesink won the first leader’s jersey. Based on the result of the second stage, he has to hand it over to his teammate Mike Teunissen.

Due to the tie in time, the general ranking was determined by the order in the stage results. Teunissen was the first Jumbo-Visma rider to cross the finish on Saturday.

A stage with start and finish in Breda will follow on Sunday. The Vuelta continues on Tuesday in Spain.
