Midwouder Guus Offerhaus dreams of a new Quick Boys cup stunt, now against AZ

NAC and De Graafschap already lost to the amateurs of Quick Boys in previous rounds, so footballer Guus Offerhaus is already dreaming about a new cup stunt. Tonight, the 23-year-old Midwouder will play against AZ, a stone’s throw from work.

Almost every day, during his lunch run, he sees the AZ stadium in Alkmaar. A stone’s throw from his work. He will shine tonight when he visits AZ with Quick Boys in the KNVB Cup tournament.

Guus Offerhaus is a 23-year-old player from Midwoud and is in his first season in Katwijk. He already had two great cup evenings with the second division team. The professionals of NAC Breda and De Graafschap were defeated on their own field. “If everything is right for us, then it is possible. When we defeated NAC, we thought: bring on De Graafschap.”

Offerhaus started playing football at MOC in Midwoud, moved to Hollandia in Hoorn early on and was scouted there by sc Heerenveen. After going through the youth teams there, he moved to Emmen, where a breakthrough in professional football failed to materialize. “Well, why is that?”, he repeats the question. “Few players are allowed to play professional football, the competition is fierce. Unfortunately, it was not meant to be.”

“A stunt is always possible in the cup tournament, you saw that with Ajax in the previous round”

Via Koninklijke HFC in Haarlem he ended up in Katwijk, where he drives four times a week. He has not yet completely put his dream of a professional life on hold. “I will give myself until I am 25, which is in two years. You never know. Cup competitions like these can certainly help in realizing a professional life. A bigger stage, an opponent of a higher level, more interest. That is certainly possible to help.”

Not without a chance in advance

He hopes to gain attention by keeping players like Vangelis Pavlidis and Dani de Wit in check. Offerhaus does not consider his team without a chance in advance, even though AZ is the opponent. “In the previous round, against the amateurs of Hardenberg, AZ also had to extend. There is always a stunt in the cup tournament, you saw that with Ajax in the previous round.”

He is supported by colleagues and family in Alkmaar. “I hope for a sneaky 1-0 for us, that would be great. Just to be sure, I have scheduled a work-from-home day on Wednesday. Then I can stay in bed a little longer, if necessary.”
