How does it feel to die over and over again? Bong Joon Ho is devoted to these and many other questions about existence and death in his new sci-fi comedy “Mickey 17”. The “Parasite” director and Oscar winner connects two topics that normally do not belong together: death and comedy.
Dying – this is the job of the main character Mickey, played by Robert Pattinson (“Twilight”, “The Batman”). His workplace is space and his employer pays him for dying by cluting it. But when one day everything does not go according to plan, Mickey suddenly faces herself.
As always with Bong Joon Ho, the film goes far beyond these premises. It takes up topics such as imperialism, exploitation and corruption. Mickey embodies the unnecessary worker: replaceable, interchangeable, functionalized.
Robert Pattinson is supported by a top-class cast: Naomi Ackie (“Star Wars: The rise of Skywalker”), Steven Yeun (“Nope”), Oscar-nominated Toni Collette (“Hereditary-The Legacy”) and Mark Ruffalo (“Poor Things”). The German premiere took place as part of the Berlinale in early March.
