With the return to Formula 1, it did not work for the former talent. A racing team from another series now has great interest.
New career option for a young German driver with a big name? The way back into Formula 1 seems to be blocked again for Mick Schumacher, now the son of Legende Michael Schumacher is apparently checking the entry into a new racing series: As Rahal Letterman Racing announced on Friday, the 26-year-old Schumacher will complete an Indycar test for the US team in an Indianapolis in an Indianapolis in an Indianapolis. The legendary US late-night talker David Letterman is involved in the racing team.
“I am very excited about the special features and properties of this racing car, which differs from the cars that I am used to – and still resembles them,” Schumacher is quoted in the message from RLL. He was “still very interested in gaining experience in the diverse world of motorsport”.
As has been active for Alpine for Alpine in the long-distance World Cup (WEC), Schumacher has been active this year. In 2021 and 2022, the former Formula 2 champion in Formula 1 drove for Haas, then lost his regular cockpit, at times also had problems with the then Haas team boss Günther Steiner and was repeatedly publicly criticized by the Austrian. In 2023 and 2024, Schumacher was in addition to his WEC engagement Formula 1 replacement driver at Mercedes. A return to a regular cockpit in the premier class, in which his father is a record world champion with seven titles together with Lewis Hamilton, smashed year after year.
Cadillac, new, in 2026 as an eleventh team in Formula 1, decided at the end of August for the Altstars Valtteri Bottas and Sergio Pérez as a regular and against Schumacher, who had previously confirmed talks. “I think it’s a bit surprising because I would have rely on the combination of experience and youth,” said Schumacher’s uncle, ex-driver and today’s TV expert Ralf Schumacher, recently in an interview with T-online. “I am convinced that Mick would have given the team with the racing experience that he has from Formula 1 and his last appearances in the long-distance world championship.”
The Formula 1 racing team from Alpine has recently extended Pierre Gasly’s contract, according to TeamBoss Flavio Briatore, the decision on the second cockpit is between the current driver Franco Colapinto and young man Paul Aron.
Now Schumacher could still return to a single-seater, but in the Indycar series and thus in North America, where partly on super-fast ovals and partly on racetracks with classic layouts. In any case, Indy legend Rahal is full of praise for Schumacher.
“I followed Mick’s career from a distance, as well as that of his father, so the thought of seeing him in one of our racing cars is very exciting,” said the three-time Indycar champion and team boss: “I think it will be a great day for RLL and also for Mick because he has his first experience in an Indycar.” Schumacher “obviously” has “a lot of talent”, says Rahal.
