The son of the Formula 1 record world champion is currently driving in pain. An intervention is looming.

Mick Schumacher revealed on TV channel Sky that he has been driving with a broken bone in his left wrist since his Indycar debut at the beginning of March. The 27-year-old was eliminated from the opening race in St. Petersburg after a rear-end collision that was not his fault – a piece of his wrist broke off.

Schumacher explained his situation to the pay-TV station: “Unfortunately, after the accident in St. Pete, a piece of my wrist broke off, which I’m still struggling with. That means I actually get out of the car and am in pain, which is of course suboptimal.” An operation will probably be necessary at the end of the year, “just to bring everything back together. It’s definitely tiring and therefore the right hand has to do a little more at the moment.”

To make matters worse: IndyCar vehicles do not have power steering. This makes driving physically demanding – in the event of an accident, particularly high forces are exerted on the hands. Most recently, the former Formula 1 driver achieved his best result of the season to date with 17th place in Long Beach. He occupies second-to-last place in the overall standings.
