At the end of last year, Mick Schumacher said goodbye to Formula 1 until further notice, where he was most recently involved in Mercedes as a test driver. The 26-year-old hoped in vain for a comeback as a regular pilot, instead he now starts in the WEC. Is the dream of the premier class of motorsport once ever dreamed of ever? His cousin David gives him little hope.
“I would like it very much-really. But I currently see the opportunities rather difficult,” replied David Schumacher in an interview with “Ran” when asked about Mick’s comeback prospects.
The son of Formula 1 legend Michael Schumacher came to the premier class as a reigning Formula 2 champion at the beginning of the 2021 season and drove there for the Haas team for two years, but he was not too successful.
“Formula 1 is extremely dynamic. Especially at Red Bull we experience the driver change again and again, who can go quickly. Who knows – if a door opens again, I definitely trust Mick that he takes the chance. I am sure that he has what it takes and would then also prove himself. But whether he actually gets this chance again, which is unfortunately questionable,” said David Schumacher.
Mick Schumacher in the DTM? “Not what really excites him”
He would like to see his prominent cousin in the DTM. David Schumacher gained experience in recent years.
“I think Mick basically would have good chances in the DTM,” said the 23-year-old. Problem: “I am not sure if that would be a thing at all. The GT sport is, I don’t think what really appeals to him or is fun.”
In the WEC, Mick finally found a package at Alpine that suits him and where he feels comfortable “. It is “a strong, exciting series – and prototype car is also the driving dynamics of what is closer to Formula 1. That fits Mick.”
Just last weekend, Mick Schumacher celebrated his second podium in the long-distance World Cup (Video opens above).
