The camp surrounding the late Michael Jackson is on trial. It’s about sexual abuse of children during the musician’s lifetime.

Five siblings against the King of Pop

It’s about the five siblings of the Cascio family: Frank, Aldo, Marie-Nicole, Eddie and Dominic Cascio. They and their parents went to court against Michael Jackson’s camp on Wednesday, January 14, 2026. The specific accusation is that all four were abused by the musician during his lifetime. The children and family spent a lot of time with the performer and were even considered his “second family”. However, the judge in charge had already given an indication that the lawsuit could have little success due to an earlier agreement, this was reported by “Billboard”.

First defense, then accusations

Initially, the family defended the King of Pop against allegations of abuse for years. On January 25, 2019, HBO released the documentary “Leaving Neverland,” which dealt with the situation surrounding the “Thriller” interpreter and made serious allegations against him. After the documentary was released, the siblings’ attitudes changed drastically and all five made allegations of abuse. The pop singer’s entourage reached an agreement with the family at the time, which included a payment of several million US dollars. The Jackson camp nevertheless said that the Cascios were simply making accusations to extort money.

Now, however, a real legal battle is brewing between the two camps. Michael Jackson’s estate team now claims that the alleged victims violated the agreement with an “extortionist” threat to launch legal proceedings unless they were paid hundreds of millions more. Mark Geragos, star lawyer and representative of the Cascios, countered that the agreement was completely invalid because the family had been put under pressure to sign it.

Lawyers exchanging blows

During the hearing on Wednesday, January 14, Mark Geragos and Marty Singer, also a well-known Hollywood lawyer, argued against each other. Cascio’s lawyer said that the negotiated settlement must be declared invalid because the strict confidentiality clause contained in it “constitutes a violation of public policy.” The estate team’s lawyer, however, described this as “nonsense” and argued that the family had clearly signed the agreement voluntarily and had negotiated an even higher settlement.

Judge Michael E. Whitaker appeared to side slightly with the Jackson estate team: In a preliminary ruling, he wrote that the evidence presented by Frank Cascio “did not support his claim that he was coerced into signing the agreement on a ‘take it or die’ basis.” The judge also announced that he would likely close the proceedings and probably require the two parties to go to arbitration. But he wanted to reconsider the matter.

Family member visibly emotional

As the family sat in the courtroom, one of the siblings became visibly emotional. Afterwards, the family’s lawyer told the press that the family traveled to Los Angeles to “see for themselves the camp that calls them liars.” He also said he would appeal if the judge ordered arbitration. The Jackson estate’s attorney declined to comment.

Michael Jackson, who died in 2009, was never convicted or held responsible for child abuse during his lifetime.
