British musician MIA has claimed that Jay-Z advised her to have plastic surgery when she signed to his record label Roc Nation in 2012.
“I’m the only one who didn’t do it.”
“Even when I met Jay-Z and signed with Roc Nation, the first thing he told me was to get plastic surgery,” the “Paper Planes” singer explained in a recent Instagram video shared by ” Livebitez” was released before the recent rape allegations against Jay-Z.
“I don’t feel insecure just because I had the surgery,” added the songwriter, whose real name is Mathangi “Maya” Arulpragasam. She was probably referring to allegations of alleged lack of self-confidence. “So her argument, ‘Maya is totally insecure, so she needs to pamper her ego’, fails. It fails. It fails, because take a look around: which women do you know who are around you? [von Jay-Z] Haven’t had any cosmetic surgery? Everyone did that. I’m the only one who didn’t do it, which already proves that it’s not an insecurity,” MIA continued.
Always anti-establishment – not just within the music industry
In her statement, she also emphasized her resilience in the industry. “If I was unsure, I would have done this a hundred times,” MIA explained in the clip. She also pointed out her unconventional path to success. “I have no problem with the fact that I [50] am, because guess what? I didn’t really get started until I was 30,” she said. “It took ten years longer than others because I was the first and I was the new one. I created something interesting that didn’t exist before.”
The Brit, who actually won’t turn 50 until next July and has been particularly notable in recent years for conspiracy ideologies surrounding the COVID-19 pandemic, signed with Jay-Z’s record label Roc Nation in 2012. She wanted to release her fourth album MATANGI there. However, in December 2013, she announced that she was leaving the label. The company had previously removed a trailer for a documentary about the making of the LP from its platforms. MIA later reported that she felt ill-advised by the rapper in a multi-million dollar legal battle with the team.
Accusations against Jay-Z
Meanwhile, Jay-Z has been facing serious allegations since December 8th. He is accused in a new civil lawsuit of being involved in the rape of a then 13-year-old girl in 2000. The alleged incident is said to have occurred at an after-show party after the MTV Video Music Awards, with Sean “Diddy” Combs also said to have been involved.
Jay-Z vehemently denied these allegations, calling the accusation an “attempt at blackmail” and “idiotic.” He has already filed a countersuit and emphasized that it is a civil lawsuit and not a criminal case. The rapper accused the plaintiff’s lawyer of merely speculating on a financial settlement.
