After 20 years in the professional game, Héctor Moreno is hanging up his football boots at the end of the year. The 37-year-old announced this via his social media channels. The Mexican central defender has been under contract with CF Monterrey since 2021 and wears the captain’s armband there. Finally, Moreno is still hoping for the Liga MX championship – it would be the first in his homeland.
“Today I look back with gratitude on the successes achieved, the titles won and the goals achieved. But I also look forward with anticipation because I still have the opportunity to complete this stage with the Rayados by fighting for another championship,” said Moreno. “It would be a dream to say goodbye with this joy, together with the fans who have given me so much and welcomed us so warmly in this city that we now consider our home.”
For more than 15 years, Moreno was a fixture in the Mexican national team, with whom he won the Gold Cup in 2011 and 2019. The 132-time national player celebrated his first major success with El Tri at a young age at the U17 World Cup in 2005. In Europe, Moreno played for AZ Alkmaar and PSV Eindhoven, with whom he became Eredivisie champions, AS Roma as well as Real Sociedad and Espanyol Barcelona.
