Metallica headlined day one at the Lollapalooza Festival in Chicago on Thursday night (July 28). They paid tribute to the Netflix series Stranger Things with a clip of Eddie Munson from the fourth season of Master of Puppets. During their performance, the group played Munson’s “Master of Puppets” scene on screen.
Metallica’s setlist consisted of “Enter Sandman”, “Nothing Else Matters” and a cover of AC/DC’s “It’s A Long Way To The Top (If You Wanna Rock ‘N’ Roll)”. As an encore, they performed “Master Of Puppets” and paid tribute to the metalhead character and the series itself with footage of Eddie Munson, played by actor Joseph Quinn.
The clip, which was broadcast on-screen during their show, is from the final episode of season four, in which Munson plays the Metallica classic.
Metallica’s “Master Of Puppets” hits the charts
Ever since the track “Master Of Puppets” — which, mind you, has added guitar parts — was featured on “Stranger Things,” the song’s streaming numbers have skyrocketed. As a result, the track, released in 1986, reached the Billboard Hot 100 and UK Top 100 Singles Charts for the first time – at number 35 and 26 respectively. This success also prompted the band to create a video for Munson’s “Master Of Puppets” scene to shoot and release their very first clip of the track.
Metallica are still excited about the series and the music choices. They explained: “The way the Duffer brothers bring music to ‘Stranger Things’ has always been unique, so we were beyond thrilled that they not only brought ‘Master Of Puppets’ to the series, but also such a central scene around it. It’s an incredible honor to be such a big part of Eddie’s journey and to once again collaborate with all the other amazing artists on the show.”
