Defending champion Germany recorded their first victory in the second game of the European Curling Championships in Lohja, Finland. One day after the unsuccessful start to the new edition of last year’s final against world champions Scotland (7:8), the selection of the German Curling Association (DCV) won 8:6 against the World Cup runners-up from Switzerland.
In the evening they suffered their second defeat against the twelve-time world champions Sweden with a 3:5.
The German women, who are still playing for their Olympic ticket in December, won their second win in the third game with an 11:8 win against the Czech Republic. At the Kisakallio Sports Institute, Skip Sara Messenzehl’s team is primarily concerned with the World Cup ticket. This requires rank seven.
Last year, the men’s team led by skip Marc Muskatewitz (29) also stormed to the title in Lohja, completely unexpectedly, and also defeated the series champion Scotland in the final (9:7). In the spring of 2025, the German men will also qualify for the Olympics, and the German men will make their comeback on the biggest stage at the Winter Games in Milan and Cortina d’Ampezzo in February.
At the European Championships in Finland, which ends next Saturday, the German quartet is aiming for a medal again. In the ten-team preliminary round, everyone goes against each other once; on Monday the duels with Italy (12 p.m.) and Denmark (8 p.m.) take place. The best four nations reach the semi-finals, the first eight qualify for the 2026 World Cup. The bottom two are relegated to Division B.
