Mendocino wins the Grand Prix of Baden

Outsider Mendocino won the 152nd Grand Prix of Baden with jockey Rene Piechulek and thus the most important Grand Prix of German horse racing.

At the racecourse in Iffezheim near Baden-Baden, the stallion crossed the finish line with a narrow lead over last year’s winner and top favorite Torquator Tasso with jockey Frankie Dettori.

“Mendocino switched off well at the back and showed tremendous speed at the end,” said Piechulek: “The result is just amazing. Everything went wonderfully.” There was a prize money of 115,000 euros for the win.

The unexpected triumph was particularly emotional for Piechulek. He had already celebrated some successes with the stallion Torquator Tasso.
