After her surprise trip to Paris, Meghan said the trip was “the culmination of many years of friendship with Pierpaolo Piccioli.” But according to Balenciaga’s creative director, the situation is very different.

It is common for public figures to receive an invitation to fashion shows during Paris Fashion Week. But according to Piccioli, Meghan took matters into her own hands and invited herself to see Balenciaga’s new collection with her own eyes.

To magazine TheCut Piccioli did say that he thought it was a “beautiful surprise” that the duchess traveled to Paris. The “many years of friendship” that Meghan boasted about consists, he says, only of exchanging superficial text messages.

‘No strategy or major orchestration’

“Meghan and I met a few years ago and we’ve been messaging each other ever since. She reached out and said she’d like to come on the show. There was no strategy or big orchestration involved,” said the creative director. “I didn’t tell anyone she was coming because I wanted it to remain a surprise,” Piccioli continues.

Meghan’s visit to Paris did not go unnoticed by anyone. A number of controversial moments made headlines worldwide. For example, a video emerged showing the Duchess laughing when a model made a smack on the Balenciaga catwalk.

Diana

Meghan also came under a lot of fire. She was not appreciated for posting a video of her feet up in a limousine as she drove past the tunnel where Princess Diana died in 1997.

She received a lot of criticism on social media. “Disgusting,” it was called, among other things. British royalty experts also spoke out in the media about how carelessly the duchess handles the memories of the accident.
