Medvedev loses to Gasquet on return

US Open winner Daniil Medvedev suffered a defeat when he returned to the tennis court after a long injury break. The second in the world rankings from Russia lost to Frenchman Richard Gasquet 2: 6, 6: 7 (5: 7) at the ATP clay court tournament in Geneva and was eliminated in the round of 16.

Medvedev was hardly able to collect any game practice for the French Open from Sunday.

“I’m not a favorite in Roland Garros, but I want to play well,” said Medvedev: “If I find my level again, I can be dangerous.” Physically, he “doesn’t feel bad. With a few more days of training, I should be ready.”

Medvedev, who is not allowed to play at Wimbledon this year due to sanctions over the Russian war of aggression in Ukraine, had to undergo groin surgery in early April and was out for a few weeks.
