bvery elliptical. Like two fairy-tale queens, the kind who fantasized about as children in facole. Maxima of Holland and Mathilde of Belgium, probably without real awareness but with a highly glamorous allure, they interpreted every little girl’s dream with the looks worn at the Gala Dinner organized in honor of the Dutch royals’ state visit to Belgium.

The two queens, more or less of the same age, one commoner by origin, the other with aristocratic blood in her veins, appeared in a shower of diamonds, tulle flowers and embroidered lace for dinner at the castle of Laeken.

Maxima of Holland played it safe with a creation by her trusted designer, Jan Taminiau. The designer, originally from the province of Brabant, had also designed her dress for her coronation ten years ago.

The blush-colored dress had a V-neck silhouette and tulle flower appliqués down to the feet.

Mathilde of Belgium instead chose an Armani Privé cape dress. Azure lace lit up the gown, bodice, and floor-length cape.

Spectacular jewels

The tiara of the Dutch queen is very precious and ancient. The jewel was purchased in 1600 by Maria II Stuart, wife of William of Orange. Maxima also wore it in Sweden for a state dinner in October 2022.

The necklace was made, however, for Queen Wilhelmina. The earrings are another very precious find: it was William III who gave them to his daughter Wilhelmina at the age of nine.

The Belgian queen took the so-called Nine Provinces Tiara out of the safe. It was the Belgian people who gave it to Queen Astrid in 1926 for her wedding to Leopold III.

The tiara is traditionally worn only by queens.
