Max Eberl has to repair the broken club

The successful manager is supposed to take up his position at FC Bayern in the middle of the crisis – and would then have three major tasks to master. t-online explains which construction sites are waiting for Max Eberl in Munich.

It should happen next Monday. Then the supervisory board of FC Bayern Munich will make a groundbreaking decision for Germany’s largest and most successful football club. Even more: make a spectacular personality finally official.

The Max Eberl era could begin at the German record champions next Monday – if he actually becomes the Munich team’s new sports director, as has been speculated for some time.

Eberl is seen – not only, but especially due to the current unrest at Bayern – as a savior for the club, which has been spoiled for success and which the mere vague possibility of a titleless year after eleven successful seasons in a row could plunge into a deep crisis of meaning. The 50-year-old, who is due to start at Säbener Straße four days later, on March 1st, actually has to master several tasks at once – which will directly point the way for the coming season and beyond. What’s more: Eberl has to repair what has been broken at Bayern in recent years. Three challenges await:

The trainer

Eberl’s task will be to finally find the coach, the one for the future, for several years, for an era – everything that neither Nagelsmann nor Tuchel wanted to achieve. He has support from sports director Christoph Freund, who has also only been in Munich since last autumn. Eberl will have to quickly communicate with the Austrian and define work processes in order to be able to pool forces and invest energy in the efforts together.

There are also reports that further personnel changes are pending. The “Kicker” reports that both technical director Marco Neppe and chief scout Markus Pilawa could be on the verge of elimination – Eberl and Freund would rather see their own confidants in important positions. Borussia Mönchengladbach’s squad planner Steffen Korell – an Eberl companion – is a candidate. According to t-online information, Felix Krüger should also be a possible option; the 36-year-old had already worked in Leipzig as a sports coordinator under Eberl.

The team

The biggest construction site for the long-time successful manager of Borussia Mönchengladbach and – not so long-standing – RB Leipzig. The fact that things are wrong in the Bayern squad was dramatically demonstrated to fans and those in charge by the last three competitive defeats in a row. “It’s not just a matter of changing the coach now, but now it’s all about how Bayern will realign itself with the team,” emphasized Stefan Effenberg in his new column for t-online. The 55-year-old had previously stated that he expected personnel changes: The Bayern bosses would “now look very closely at the players: Who has the quality to deliver their top performance under this pressure? Who will accept this challenge? Now it shows who has to stay and who should go.”

The contracts of several professionals expire in 2025: Thomas Müller, Leroy Sané, Joshua Kimmich, Alphonso Davies, Manuel Neuer. There is no longer any controversy about all of these stars at Bayern; Others who repeatedly failed to meet Munich’s high standards, such as Dayot Upamecano, who was too often prone to errors, could also be up for consideration. “If one or the other doesn’t want to sign now, it will almost have to be sold in the summer,” says Effenberg. “This is a huge construction site. In recent years, some important players have ended up leaving for free. The David Alaba case should be a warning to Bayern.”
