Mauritshuis closed after possible graffiti art work | Inland

The Mauritshuis in The Hague was cordoned off by the police this afternoon after a possible daubing of a work of art. Several sources report this to this editor. Someone would have been arrested.

A spokeswoman for Extinction Rebellion cannot exclude or confirm involvement of one or more of their sympathizers. In any case, no action was notified in advance.

The Mauritshuis contains many masterpieces by Dutch masters from the Golden Age, including The Girl with a Pearl Earring by Johannes Vermeer and Rembrandt’s The Anatomy Lesson by Dr Nicolaes Tulp.

Almost all works of art in Dutch museums are well protected. Sometimes they are behind special museum glass, but not always. That is also the case at the Mauritshuis.

Police can’t confirm anything yet. “It seems that something has been smeared, but I am waiting for confirmation from the Mauritshuis itself,” said a spokesperson.
