Matthias Sammer makes clear demands on the professionals

Matthias Sammer sees Borussia Dortmund as a “big challenger” to Bayern Munich in the coming Bundesliga season, but calls for more stability from the German runners-up.

The team shouldn’t just play well “when the sun is shining, when all mechanisms are working and a group dynamic inspires people,” said the BVB advisor to the “Sächsische Zeitung”: “We have to be able to show our quality on rainy days too, when it resistance and setbacks.”

BVB “haven’t demonstrated this consistency (…) recently at the top level. It will now be a big challenge to organize and then stabilize these performance parameters. Bayern Munich is still number one,” affirmed Sammer.

The 54-year-old also expects cup winners RB Leipzig, Champions League participants Bayer Leverkusen and “certainly a surprise team” in the coming season.

BVB puts millions into the new squad

BVB has invested a lot in staff. In addition to the German internationals Karim Adeyemi (RB Salzburg), Nico Schlotterbeck (SC Freiburg) and Niklas Süle (Bayern Munich), the Black and Yellows also signed Sébastien Haller (Ajax Amsterdam) as a replacement for Erling Haaland and six-man Salih Özcan from 1. FC Cologne and the substitute goalkeepers Marcel Lotka (Hertha BSC) and Alexander Meyer (Jahn Regensburg).

The new and old coach Edin Terzic sits on the bench, while Sebastian Kehl has succeeded Michael Zorc as sporting director.

“From this new combination in connection with the transfers that we have made, we hope to make the Borussia-Dortmund way more recognizable again,” said Sammer.
