Matthias Brügelmann was with Axel Springer for 30 years. Now the sports boss leaves the company.
He completed Axel Springer’s journalist school and joined “Bild” Bremen as a reporter. Matthias Brügelmann was later sports director. Most recently, the 52-year-old worked as editor-in-chief of the SPORT competence center of the “Bild” and the “Welt” group. Now he leaves the company after 30 years.
Axel Springer announced on Wednesday. As “Medien insider” reports, Brügelmann changes to the Red Bull Group and is said to become Global Head of Content within the Red Bull Media House.
As of September 1, 2025, Henning Feindt took over the management of the competence center and thus succeeds Brügelmann. The 43-year-old is currently deputy editor-in-chief of sports. In the future, he will be supported by Carli Underberg, who will become deputy editor -in -chief and also take responsibility for editorial partnerships. Walter M. Straten continues to work as a deputy editor -in -chief.
Brügelmann looked back at Axel Springer in a statement full of gratitude. He was allowed to experience everything-from the traineeship to the editor-in-chief, from the print era to the integration of artificial intelligence. He particularly highlighted his role in the moderation of “Reif is live” and in the “Sport Bild” Award. Both were childhood dreams for him. Brügelmann said: “From the bottom of my heart I say: Thank you for everything.”
Axel Springer CEO Mathias Döpfner also said goodbye. Brügelmann’s work for “Bild” was “great sport with a great team spirit”. Excellent and relevant sports journalism is part of the brand identity of “Bild” – and Brügelmann has always developed it. Döpfner wished the outgoing editor -in -chief for his future path “only the best”.
