At the end of the 2025 calendar year, FC Bayern confidently leads the Bundesliga with a nine-point lead. Not only the Munich team’s pure sporting record, but also the team’s performance outside of the 90 minutes impressed Germany’s record national player Lothar Matthäus.

The 1990 world champion captain, who became German champion seven times with FC Bayern, gave the top marks to the Bundesliga Croesus for the 2025/2026 season so far in his “Sky” column.

“As an interim report, I give it an A and even put an asterisk after it. The demeanor, the discipline, the implementation of the coach’s tasks, the cooperation, the joy on the pitch and also the presentation off the pitch – all of that is perfect for me,” said the 64-year-old about FC Bayern, who won 13 of their 15 games in the Bundesliga and are still unbeaten.

From an already outstanding team, Lothar Matthäus once again highlighted one player in particular: “For me, the player of the Bundesliga season so far is definitely Harry Kane.”

Matthäus: “Kane exceeded all expectations”

The TV expert explained his opinion as to why the English superstar is, for him, the best player of the first half of the season so far: “He’s not only leading the goalscoring list with 19 goals. The way he performs on the pitch and off the pitch, that’s a different Kane than the one we bought two years ago. He was brought in as a goalscorer who was supposed to fill the role of Robert Lewandowski, but Kane is much more for the team. He’s someone who plays along, collaborates and inspires others,” was the special praise of the world footballer from 1990.

Matthäus couldn’t stop raving about the 32-year-old. “He has only just begun his collection of titles. Everyone hopes that he will stay with FC Bayern for a longer period of time. A lot was expected of him, but Kane has exceeded all expectations,” said the ex-Bayern star about the English national team captain.

Last weekend, Harry Kane celebrated his 100th direct goal involvement in the Bundesliga. And that in just 78 games in the German football upper house – a clear new Bundesliga record since detailed data collection began.
