Matt Berninger, known as the charismatic singer and head of The National, reports back with his second solo album: Get Sunk will be released on May 30th. With the first single “Bonnet of Pins” there is already a first taste of the sound of the new record.
Numerous companions from Berninger were involved in the recordings, including Meg Duffy (Habits), Julia Laws (Ronboy), Kyle Resnick (The National, Beirut), Garret Lang, Sterling Laws, Booker T. Jones, Harrison Whitford, Mike Brewer as well as Walter Martin and Paul Maroon from The Walkmen. The singer received help as well as with earlier work by producer and sound engineer Sean O’Brien, who also wrote on some songs.
Many sessions took place in the basement studio of Silverlake, California, where Berninger and O’Brien worked on the songs together with their guests.

The first single “Bonnet of Pins” plays with poetic breaks. Cigarettes, styrofoam cup with “Nabokov cocktails”, misunderstandings and sadness merge into one of these typical Berninger narrative full of profound and laconic humor.
Berninger, who has already entered every conceivable emotional abyss with The National, openly admits that after his first solo album Serpentine Prison (2020) he experienced a difficult phase and also a writer: “I was sorry to ask myself all the time: ‘Why am I like this?'” Get Sunk now brings him the feeling of finally being able to breathe again after having been under water for a long time.
The fact that identity is not something stuck, but actually very movable is one of the topics of the new album that the musician developed primarily in his new home in Connecticut. Berninger found a new creative freedom between surreal art projects in his barn and exploring nature.

Matt Berninger on tour 2025
Matt Berninger also introduces Get Sunk live. The tour starts on May 19 in Seattle in the USA and ends on August 22nd in Dublin, in Ireland. On September 3rd, the singer can be seen at his exclusive gig in Germany in Berlin. He is accompanied by the band that also helped to help shape the recordings. Julia Laws alias Ronboy is there as a support.
