FC Bayern has extended Mathys Tel’s contract until 2029. The 18-year-old striker is seen as a great promise for the future and has already been directly involved in eleven goals this season.

Mathys Tel has signed a new contract with FC Bayern Munich. The 18-year-old is committed to the German record champions until 2029. Tel had received a lot of playing time, especially at the beginning of the season, and had attracted attention with many goals.

After a long goal drought, he last scored in the 2-2 draw against SC Freiburg. It was Tel’s eleventh direct goal involvement this season (seven goals, four assists).

Eberl: “He will put a lot of exclamation points”

“He is an important building block for the future of this team, with him we already have the next generation of FC Bayern in our squad,” the new sports director Max Eberl is quoted as saying on the record champions’ homepage. “Mathys came to Munich as a young player and, at the age of 18, has already gained important experience at the highest level. He will set a lot of exclamation marks here, at FC Bayern.”

Sports director Christoph Freund added: “Every club wants players like Mathys Tel: young, extremely talented, hungry and willing to learn.” And further: “We want the right mix in our squad, and Mathys plays an important role here.”

So far, Tel has primarily been a noble joker

Tel had expressed dissatisfaction with his role as Joker in the winter. In the Bundesliga, the French U21 international was on the field for 22 percent of the minutes and was in the starting line-up for the first time against Freiburg. The new sports director Max Eberl made several positive comments about Tel during his introduction and emphasized that it was important to develop talent like Tel.

There had previously been isolated rumors about the youngster’s possible departure. French media quoted statements by his advisor Gadiri Camara that one had to look at all options if one did not feel that one was on the same path. Tel moved from Stade Rennes to Munich in the summer of 2022 for a fee of around 20 million euros.
