The Dutch bike star Mathieu van der Poel was difficult: pneumonia. The Tour de France is over early for the classic king.
Former cycling champion Mathieu van der Poel has to give up at the Tour de France because of pneumonia. Today he will no longer compete from Montpellier’s 16th stage to the legendary Mont Ventoux.
“Mathieu suffered from the symptoms of a cold in the last few days. Yesterday afternoon, his condition began to deteriorate significantly,” said his team Alpecin-Deceuninck. Van der Poel had won the second stage in Boulogne-sur-Mer on the tour of France and thus conquered the yellow jersey. He wore it for a total of four days.
In the evening, the 30-year-old received a fever and was brought to a hospital in Narbonne for further investigations, it continues. Pneumonia was diagnosed there at the Dutch.
“In consultation with the medical staff, it was decided that he could no longer continue the race. His health is a top priority,” said the message. Many drivers are currently suffering from a cold at the Tour de France. The overall leading Tadej Pogačar also showed slight symptoms.
