Markus Gaugisch hopes for a boost for the DHB team

National coach Markus Gaugisch is hoping for a boost for the German national team as a result of the historic European Cup success with the women’s handball team from SG BBM Bietigheim.

“It’s a huge success for the club, but it’s also an exclamation mark for German women’s handball. It shows that something is also possible in Germany,” Gaugisch told SID on Monday.

The Bietigheim coach, who has also been in charge of the DHB team since mid-April, hopes “that our players will carry this experience into the national team”.

The same applies to the national players from Borussia Dortmund, who were internationally active in the Champions League. “It was also a good season for the development of the national team,” said Gaugisch.

Bietigheim won the European Cup for the first time in the club’s history on Sunday. It was also the first major international title for a German women’s handball team since SC Leipzig won the EHF Cup in 1992.

Gaugisch had already led the SG to an early win of the German championship this season, and at the end of May the title defense in the DHB Cup beckons at the final tournament in Stuttgart.
