In the market value update of the English second division, numerous young professionals come into focus. The attackers Jaden Philogene (22) and Morgan Whittaker (23) in particular are making strong gains. But even with two well-known faces from the Bundesliga, the market value curve in the Championship is pointing upwards.

Former Bremen player Josh Sargent (24) from Norwich City, who scored eight goals in the last twelve games after returning from a long injury break, has recorded a small increase. After the American striker was devalued by one million euros in December, Sargent increased by the same amount and climbed back to 12 million euros, which was his career high to date. “He is well on the way to being upgraded even more if he stays fit until the end of the season,” says Transfermarkt Area Manager UK Daniel Busch, assessing the situation. Sargent’s new and old market value puts the national player in 27th place in the current ranking of the most valuable second division players in England. In the German second division, his valuation would be by far the top value.

According to the update, the former Leipzig player Ethan Ampadu (23) is significantly better than Sargent in the ranking. The former RB loanee hasn’t missed a minute at Leeds United this season, moving from defensive midfield to the center of defense at the start of the year and taking over the captain’s armband for the promotion aspirants. His market value increases from 12 million to 15 million euros, which is only bettered by 13 players in the league.

In addition to Ampadu, only the two top winners Philogene from Hull City and Whittaker from Plymouth Argyle were able to add a larger or equal amount to the market value. For left wing philogenes, the increase from 4 million to 12 million euros means an increase of 50 percent. Left winger Whittaker even doubles his valuation from 3 million to 6 million euros. “Both have attracted interest from clubs in the top leagues,” explains Busch. “Philogene was directly involved in 14 goals in 22 league appearances and is not only one of the main reasons for the Tigers’ strong season, but also one of the most exciting players in the Championship.” His market value exceeds the base fee of almost 6 million paid to Aston Villa in the summer . Euro has already doubled.

Meanwhile, Whittaker showed how good the environment in Plymouth is for him. A short-term return to home club Swansea was unsuccessful. Instead, he signed on permanently with loan club Argyle and went one better after his strong performances in the promotion season. With 17 goals, he is one of the three best goalscorers in the league. Busch said: “Following interest from several Premier League and Championship clubs in January, even more teams are monitoring his situation ahead of the summer transfer window.”

This is how transfer market market values work

The transfer market market values are created taking into account various pricing models as well as a strong involvement of the transfer market community, which deals with the values in detailed discussions. The transfer market market values cannot generally be equated with the transfer fees actually paid.

The goal is not to predict a price, but rather an expected value. When determining the market value, both individual transfer modalities and situational conditions are relevant to a certain extent. Examples of this are listed here. Transfermarkt does not use an algorithm (for detailed market value definition).
