Market value level in Norway rising – Fofana most valuable player in league history

Update elite series

In the season update of the Norwegian Eliteserien, the general market value level has been adjusted significantly upwards in line with the development on the transfer market. With storm talent David Datro Fofana (19) from champion Molde FK there is a new record market value in Norway’s upper house and also teammate Sivert Mannsverk (20), Hugo Vetlesen (22) and Roma newcomer Ola Solbakken (24) from FK Bodø/Glimt and Rosenborg -Attacker Casper Tengstedt (22) increase in the millions.

The change in the market value structure has “to do with the positive development of Norwegian football,” explains market value administrator “Arturus”, “and the need to adjust to the market values of comparable leagues here at Transfermarkt. However, this increase was targeted, because above all the players who are interesting for the international market were identified and rated higher.”

Thanks to top international stars such as Erling Haaland (22), up to now with 5 million euros when he left Molde for Salzburg in early 2019 together with Tore André Flo (went from Siena to Vålerenga in 2005), market value record holder of the elite series, or Martin Ødegaard (23) the Norwegian promotion of young talent has achieved a significantly higher prestige. New top talents such as Bruges’ Antonio Nusa (17), recently featured in the talent calendar, or the top scorer in the Danish Superligaen, Andreas Schjelderup (18; Nordsjaelland), would have manifested this.

“Arturus” continued: “The transfer fees are increasing and the league is also making progress in the 5-year UEFA ranking. The league is in great demand as a scouting market because many young players gain their trust and the sales prices are still rather low in relation to other leagues. However, the price level is already changing noticeably, because the international ‘powerhouses’ of the league, Molde and Bodø/Glimt, in particular, are increasingly demanding higher sums for their players. But there are also changes in the smaller, notoriously tight clubs on the national market, because from next season the distribution of income from the new TV contract will lead to an approximate doubling of the prize money, which will be particularly relevant for those teams becomes. Because instead of having to sell players early due to mediocre offers due to financial difficulties, this additional money could perhaps be used to keep talented people a little longer and develop them further, or to insist on higher transfer fees straight away.”

Market values Norway: Moldes Fofana with record – Solbakken & Co. increase

As a result of this development, top winner Fofana has increased its market value tenfold to EUR 7 million – a record in the elite series. “Arturus” says of the Ivorian international: “The 19-year-old was considered a huge talent even before his move to Molde and finally made his breakthrough in his second season on Norwegian soil. He is fast, tricky, strong in tackles and can hardly be separated from the ball, but still has weaknesses in decision-making and finishing. Nevertheless, his individual skills are so outstanding that a number of international clubs are said to have approached Molde. Fabrizio Romano recently reported that Brighton are very interested and that Molde does not want to negotiate less than 10 million euros in view of other interested parties such as Ajax. Due to the current ‘hype’ about Fofana, parallels with Haaland are often drawn, but they have little substance, since the Ivorian is a completely different type of player and does not yet come close to Haaland’s talent in the overall package. Nonetheless, given his young age, strong season, strong market interest and recent senior squad call-up, Fofana will be rewarded with the appropriate upgrade.”

Fofana’s midfield colleague Mannsverk is up 350 percent – from one million to now 4.5 million euros, which means a shared second place in the elite series ranking with Bodø/Glimts Vetlesen (+3.3 million). “The 20-year-old organizes the champions’ midfield center and was named the best talent of the season ahead of Fofana. Mannsverk is good defensively, aggressively, agile for his size, has good technique and often plays penultimate passes, which explains his few direct involvements in goals. His strong performances were recently rewarded with his first nomination for Norway’s senior national team. Feyenoord is said to have already inquired about him, but such a move is not expected until summer at the earliest. But there won’t be a bargain like the comparable Fredrik Aursnes two years ago for the Dutch this time, because Mannsverk’s contract still has three years to run.”

After Vetlesen, who as a central midfielder registered 19 goals and 14 assists across all competitions in 2022 – only Kevin De Bruyne comes from the top 15 leagues with even more goal contributions (41) – Solbakken is the biggest market value gainer at Bodø/Glimt, up 1 .5 million to 3.5 million euros. “The upgrade was comparatively cautious, as Solbakken struggled with injury problems for a large part of the season. In the fall he was able to gather match practice again, in which he knew how to convince. Nevertheless, skepticism remains as to whether the step to Rome is still a bit too big,” says the Norwegian market value admin.

Rosenborg striker Tengstedt has gone from 450,000 to 3.5 million euros. After joining from AC Horsens for a million in the summer, the Dane notched 15 goals and nine assists in 14 Eliteserien games, propelling his club into the European Cup ranks. “Arturus” about Tengstedt: “Not only the scorers per se are decisive for this high appreciation, but also the mostly demanding way in which the goals were scored. With his keen eye for goals and outstanding shooting technique, the young striker is already on the list of bigger international clubs.”

Meanwhile, the previous market leader Patrick Berg (25; Bodø/Glimt) is devalued – by 500,000 to 4 million euros, which means that the “six” that was brought back from Lens in the summer after six months for 4.5 million euros falls back to fourth place. “In France, Berg couldn’t fight for a regular place. This is also the main reason for the devaluation, which is not greater, however, as he continues to play a role in the national team and has recently found his old form again at Bodø/Glimt,” says “Arturus”.

This is how the Transfermarkt market values work

The Transfermarkt market values are created taking into account various pricing models and a strong involvement of the Transfermarkt community, which deals with the values in detailed discussions. The transfer market market values are not to be equated with the transfer fees actually paid.

The goal is not to predict a price, but an expected value. When determining the market value, both individual transfer modalities and situational framework conditions are relevant to a certain extent. Examples of this are listed here. Transfermarkt does not use an algorithm (for detailed market value definition).
