Mariska’s husband Anton (38) suffers from a hereditary disease, so she takes action: ‘I thought, yes, I am going to do this’

The Elfstedentocht skating in the Netherlands is not happening this year for the time being. That is why Mariska Verkade (37) from Krimpen aan den IJssel is skating on the Weissensee in Austria on January 28. Together with five others, she travels 200 kilometers to commemorate Huntington’s disease, from which her husband suffers. “It’s one day of suffering for us. Someone who is sick has to fight that battle every day.”
