While the Obdam fair is built up outside the Fair, there is a lot of work inside the Obdam Wapen. Seats are mounted and boxes are unpacked. “The fair comes too early for us, but that’s a good thing, because so much still has to be done,” says Marise.
Marise actually had a career in healthcare, but when she came into contact with the hospitality industry, she fell in love with the profession instantly. “I worked here when it was still the Almethist and then also followed a hospitality education. That went very well and that I am now going to run my own business at the age of 19 is really a dream come true.”
Difficult time for hospitality
Brother and sister will run the business together. Marise as a hostess and Martijn especially behind the scenes for the financial part. Opening a case at a time when a lot of hospitality closes seems to be crazy. Recently, the manager of Café Nelly’s in Obdam announced at the doors close.
Yet Martijn does not see bears on the road and opening the café-restaurant as an opportunity: “Some things are always risky and the hospitality industry is indeed difficult, but that is precisely why it is important that a place like the Obdam weapon opens. It is worth the risk.”
