Who are the ex-international who congratulated the AfD on the successful election result? Some were certain: one of them is Mario Basler. It has now been confronted.
After the Bundestag election in 2025, a statement by AfD boss Tino Chrupalla led to speculation. He claimed to have received congratulations from two former national players and ex-Bayern professionals. He did not name the name – but the name Mario Basler quickly fell on social media. Now the 56-year-old reacts to the rumors and makes it clear that he has nothing to do with the AfD.
On the sidelines of the presentation of his book “Life after the Best Years”, which he wrote together with Markus Babbel, Basler was asked by the TV station RTL. Laucally, he wiped off the rumors. “This party should have a plan first. They should not only have the plan ‘foreigner out’. Bad enough that they got so many percentage,” he said.
He noticed that Chrupalla had grinned when his name was mentioned. Basler decidedly rejects the fact that he is said to have congratulated the AfD himself. “It is not true. Before that happens, I would have to be born four times.”
It is clear to Basler that he does not want to pay attention to the party. “You don’t really have to say words about the AfD. You shouldn’t give this party, which is actually not a party for me, no platform.” In its view, the AfD is “far from Germany” and “has as much to do with Germany as the earth with the moon”.
Basler also reveals to whom he made his vote: “I chose CDU. I chose Friedrich Merz.”
