Marijke Groenewoud extends world title on mass start after successful teamwork with Irene Schouten | Sport

Schouten thirdMarijke Groenewoud has beautifully extended her world title on the mass start. The 24-year-old Dutch surprised the competition with an early attack, after Irene Schouten’s acceleration was defused. Schouten, two-time world champion on the mass start, took the bronze medal.

Silver Hoolwerf

Hoolwerf had to let Bart Swings go ahead in a long sprint. The Dutchman came out of the last corner too wide and was unable to catch up with the Belgian. Jorrit Bergsma finished fifth. He drove a large part of the sixteen laps for Hoolwerf.

Bergsma kept the pace high, so that escape was hardly possible. Hoolwerf could not crown the good work of his compatriot with the world title. During the final he collided with a South Korean, who fell.

Hoolwerf handed out compliments to Bergsma at the finish. “He kept the group together nicely,” he said. “Then I have to finish it. But I had a hard time with the corners. If I’m short on Swings, I can beat him. But I made too many meters in the corners. That’s why I couldn’t win anymore.”

Bergsma was of the opinion that Swings deserved to win. “I think he was the strongest. But Bart did well. I think we can form a good duo in the future. Me as an attacker and Bart to finish the race in a sprint.”
