The nominations for the Class of 2024 The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame are there – and the list includes Mariah Carey, Phish, Outkast, Oasis, Billy Idol, Cyndi Lauper, Joy Division/New Order, Soundgarden, The White Stripes, Joe Cocker , Bad Company, Black Crowes, Chubby Checker and Maná.
The names of the award winners are announced at the end of April, as well as the names of the artists who receive the Musical Influence Award, the Musical Excellence Award and the Ahmet Ertegun Non-Performer Award. The annual ceremony will then take place in Los Angeles in autumn.
“These remarkable nominees each created their own musical style and their own attitude and thus influenced generations of music lovers and contributed to the constantly developing sound and the continuous growth of rock & roll,” said John Sykes, Chairman of the Rock & Roll of Fame Foundation.
In order to qualify for this year’s choice, the first single or the first album of every nominee in 2000 or earlier must have been released. Eight of the 14 nominees (Bad Company, The Black Crowes, Chubby Checker, Joe Cocker, Billy Idol, Maná, Outkast and Phish) are on the ballot for the first time. They were all selected in previous years. (Chubby Checker is the longest at the age of 41.)
This is the third nomination for sound garden and the second for Oasis, Mariah Carey, Cyndi Lauper, White Stripes and Joy Division/New Order.
Joy Division and New Order are technically two different bands. However, New Order was founded by the surviving Joy Division members Peter Hook, Bernard Sumner and Stephen Morris after the death of Frontmann Ian Curtis in 1980. The only other member of the band was the keyboardist Gillian Gilbert. The two bands have more common DNA than the faces and the small faces, which were recorded in 2012 as a band.
New Order have not performed with Hook since 2005. The relationships between the two camps are tense after a legal dispute, but the Hall of Fame is perhaps the only place to return to list a few songs in honor of their past.
“It will be a difficult award ceremony when we arrive there, but as my wife said, we have to stand over these things … and be nice and polite and think the best,” Hook 2023 told Billboard. “Perhaps this is the olive branch that we need to end the injustices that have happened with New Order. It is a very strange position, but we are not the first group that has outlawed each other, and we won’t be the last either. ”
Is there even an outkast reunion?
The ceremony could bring Outkast together for the first time since the end of its farewell tour in 2014. In his latest Rolling-Stone interview, André 3000 was not particularly interested in reunification of the group. “I already knew when I was 25 that I no longer want to be on stage at a certain age to play these songs,” he said. “They required a certain energy. To be honest, I’m not a big fan of looking back. I just don’t. I am grateful for everything that happened, but it was a time. It is exactly that for me. It was a great time and I wish you all had been. ”
A date for this year’s ceremony has not yet been announced, but it usually takes place in October or November. At that time, Oasis will play reunion shows in Asia, Australia and South America, and it is possible that they cannot come, provided they are accepted and are interested in it at all. “Fuck the Rock N Roll Hall of Fame, which is full of bumbaclarts,” Liam Gallagher posted on X. “You know that I don’t need any wank award from any old man with cowboy hat.”
Mariah Carey was on the ballot last year and was disappointed that she didn’t make it. “My thoughts are that I didn’t make it,” she said last year the “La Times”. “Everyone called me and said: ‘I think you come in’ and I was so excited. But then it didn’t happen. My lawyer [Allen Grubman] Was included in the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in front of me. “
