The mayor of SherryThe popular María José García-Pelayowill be elected this Saturday president of the Spanish Federation of Municipalities and Provinces (FEMP), a position that until now was held by Abel Caballero (PSOE).

As popular sources informed EFE this Friday, the vice president will be the mayor of Santander, Gema Igualand the spokespersons will be occupied by the mayors of Valencia, María José Catalá, and of Zaragoza, Natalia Chueca, who will be officially elected this Saturday at the XII Plenary Session this Saturday.

García-Pelayo has been mayor of Jerez since June 17, 2023a position he holds for the third time after holding it between 2003 and 2005 and between 2011 and 2015.

Furthermore, it was vice president of the Andalusian Parliament (2008-2011), senator for the autonomous community of Andalusia in the XIV Legislature, national deputy in the XI, XII, XIII and XIV legislatures, and councilor of the Jerez city council from 1995 to 2019.

The plenary session of the FEMP, which meets every four years, will adapt its structures this Saturday to the results of the 28M elections with the election of the new Government bodies and will approve the lines of action for the 2023-2027 mandate.

The meeting will begin at ten in the morning at the Municipal Congress Palace of Madrid with the opening session, in which interventions by the president of the FEMP, Abel Caballero, are scheduled; the mayor of Madrid, José Luis Martínez-Almeida, and the acting Minister of Territorial Policy, Isabel Rodríguez, and which is also expected to be attended by the PP spokesperson in Congress, Cuca Gamarra.

After the inauguration, the election of the plenary board and the four working commissions – local governments, administration and territory; social cohesion and citizenship; sustainability and promotion, and statutes -, which will debate the more than 250 proposed resolutions presented, which will be approved early in the afternoon.

Meanwhile, the deadline for submitting candidates for the new bodies will be open for one hour: the Governing Board and the Territorial Council.

During the day, several exhibition venues have been organized that will bring attendees closer to the activity carried out by the FEMP throughout the term that is ending.

There will also be a specific information space enabled on the Federation’s Contracting Center and others on the local management of European Funds, the commitment to the 2030 Agenda and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
