These are the words of the Polish referee to a Blaugrana fan who told him during an event in Poland: “I still don’t have you because of what happened last year against the Nerazzurri at San Siro”

We always talk about referees, but in another language and with a smile on our faces. Nothing to do with what is happening in our area, even if a bit of Italy has something to do with it. The context was an event in Poland attended – among others – by Szymon Marciniak, referee of the last Inter-Barcelona match. A Blaugrana fan intercepted him and expressed doubts about that direction in the Champions League, but the whistle responded in kind…

Do you remember the crazy 4-3 Nerazzurri win in the Champions League semi-final, the one with Frattesi’s goal in extra time? Here, the Pole was directing. And his refereeing, after a year, did not go down well with a boy of Blaugrana faith. The fan thus took advantage of Marciniak’s closeness during the event and pointed out to him calmly and with a smile: “I still haven’t forgiven you for what happened last year against Inter…”. But the referee, always cordially, definitely caught him off guard: “Actually, to be honest, there is nothing to forgive. In fact, my decisions were… in favor of Barcelona.”

penalties and var

Marciniak continued: “I didn’t give Inter a penalty in the first half, the VAR called me back and showed me the foul” in reference to the intervention on Lautaro at the start of the match. And again, recalling Mkhitaryan’s foul on Yamal which could have resulted in a penalty for the Blaugrana: “In the second half I awarded a penalty to Barcelona and the VAR corrected me because the foul was five centimeters outside the area. So I made two decisions in favor of Barcelona and the VAR corrected me. This is life.” The Blaugrana fan took the bait, before risking a joke: “But if I give you a few hundred euros, can you whistle a penalty for Barcelona?”. Absolutely no, that’s clear. But at least they both had smiles on their faces.
