Marc Bohan, long-time Dior couturier, dies at the age of 97

Marc Bohan, the couturier who worked for French luxury fashion house Dior for three decades, died last Wednesday at the age of 97. This is reported by the industry magazine Women’s Wear Daily..

Bohan was the longest-serving designer at Dior, surpassing even founder Christian Dior himself. He was appointed successor to Yves Saint Laurent in 1961 and remained at the head of the creative department until 1989.

The designer was known for his affinity for a “timeless view of beauty.” “I make clothes for real women, not for myself, not for mannequins and not for fashion magazines,” he said in an interview with WWD to mark his 25th anniversary at Dior. “I like to leave the abstract creations to others.”

“Things should look simple but not ordinary,” he explained in a 1970 interview with WWD. “What I’m trying to do is create luxury. Through quality. Through taste. Through simplicity. Something very sophisticated. Very elegant. Not noticeable at all. This is real elegance. And so few people understand that.”

Bohan died in Châtillon-sur-Seine, France. According to an announcement on the Libra Memoria website, a memorial service is planned for September 13 at the Saint-Nicolas church.
