Shewarge Alene won the marathon in Stockholm in May. Now the Ethiopian runner has died surprisingly.

The world of athletics mourns the loss of Shewarge Alene. The Ethiopian, who won the marathon in the Swedish capital Stockholm this year, died surprisingly at the age of only 30.

In an Instagram contribution, the organizers published a black and white photo of the athlete and said: “With deep grief we received the news of the death of Shewarge Alene, the winner of the Adidas Stockholm Marathon 2025.”

According to the statement, Alene felt uncomfortable during a training session and was then taken to a hospital “where her life unfortunately could no longer be saved”.

The long-distance runner only celebrated her greatest success in May: at the Stockholm Marathon, she was the first to finish after 2:30:38 hours. She took part in a total of 27 marathons in her career and won 12 of them.

A teammate from her training group mourned the young Ethiopian and described the runner with touching words: “Shewarge was a determined athlete, but also a spacious friend who was always ready to encourage others.” One trainer from Alene said: “We not only lost a great runner, but also a role model for young girls in her country.”

The organizer also expressed his condolences: “Our thoughts are with her family and their relatives.”
